DOT Physicals Q & A

Who needs a DOT physical?

The Department of Transportation requires a physical for commercial drivers in the state of Missouri. Any driver who owns or operates a commercial vehicle having a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of over 10,000 lbs must have a DOT physical performed by an approved physician. The AccuHealth Urgent Care team includes physicians who are approved to administer this examination.

What is the purpose of a DOT physical?

The DOT physical is designed to verify that you're safely able to drive a commercial vehicle and that you don't have any medical problems that could cause problems for you or others while on the road.

What does a DOT health history check include?

The first part of a DOT physical is a check of your health history. You'll be asked about all of the following.

  • Hearing
  • Vision
  • Heart health
  • Blood pressure
  • History of stroke
  • History of dizziness and/or fainting
  • Respiratory health
  • Brain injury
  • Psychiatric disorders
  • Alcohol use
  • Drug use
  • Diabetes and other specific illnesses

The health history is quite comprehensive and will include other questions as well. It's important that you answer these questions openly and honestly. Admitting to an illness or issue doesn't necessarily prevent you from passing your DOT physical. For example, if you have diabetes, it doesn't prevent you from obtaining a DOT commercial license, as long as diabetes can be controlled without injections.

What happens during a DOT physical?

The doctor will check all of the following.

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Blood pressure
  • Mouth and throat health
  • Lung function
  • Balance and reflexes
  • Abdomen
  • Urinary system
  • Spinal health
  • Limb health

What types of tests are done during a DOT exam?

The physicians at AccuHealth Urgent Care will conduct a urinalysis to evaluate blood sugar and protein levels. Alcohol and drug testing are usually done separately during the pre-employment process, so it may not be part of a DOT exam. Blood tests may be done during a DOT physical if they're needed. In some cases, physicians may complete an X-ray of the chest or of another area to investigate symptoms or to verify wellness during a DOT exam.

How long will a DOT examination be valid?

The results of your DOT examination are valid for up to 24 full months. Keep the results with you in your vehicle at all times.
