Ear Infection Q & A

What is an acute ear infection?

An acute ear infection is a short-term ear infection in either or both ears. This type of ear infection often has a rapid onset, and it can be intensely painful.

What is a chronic ear infection?

A chronic ear infection is a longer-lasting ear infection that tends to re-occur in some cases. Patients with chronic ear infections need to seek treatment to avoid long-term damage or even hearing loss.

How do you know if you have an ear infection?

There are several symptoms that can indicate an ear infection. These include:

  • Ear pain, which can range from a dull ache to a sharper type of pain
  • Restlessness at night
  • Dizziness
  • Balance issues
  • Difficulty in hearing clearly
  • Ear leakage
  • Fever
  • Sensation of heat around the ear
  • Inflammation in and around the ear
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you have some of these symptoms, see a doctor at AccuHealth Urgent Care right away for a prompt diagnosis and effective treatment.

What is the treatment for ear infections?

The treatment for ear infections depends on whether the infection is bacterial or viral. A bacterial ear infection is usually resolved with short-term oral antibiotic use. You'll usually start to feel better after only a day or two of antibiotics, but it's important that you finish the entire prescription as written to get the full benefit of the antibiotics and fully eradicate the ear infection. A viral ear infection can't be resolved with antibiotics, but it will resolve on its own. Pain relievers can be used to alleviate any discomfort, and the AccuHealth Urgent Care doctor may be able to recommend additional measures for relief.

Ear drainage, known as ear lavage, may be used as a preventive measure once your ears are healthy. Ear lavage clears out wax buildup that may have contributed to ear infections in the past. The doctor will use a special tool to loosen ear wax and will follow that by squirting a saline solution into each ear. After that, you'll turn your head to the side to allow your ears to drain the remnants of the ear wax. Ear lavage is sometimes recommended for patients who suffer from chronic ear infections.
